Week 18: Ending March 16, 2003

Monday:
We arise at 6 am and are on the road before 7am.
Wind farms
We decide to spend the night at a WalMart Supercenter outside of Phoenix. We are joined by about 18 other RVs of various sorts. Conveniently located nearby is an In’n’Out Burger restaurant. We walk over for a late supper of delicious cheeseburgers.

Tuesday:
We push onwards and arrive in Las Cruces, New Mexico, around 6:30 pm. We book two nights at RV Doc’s Park and Service. It is not a fancy resort, but it is a Good Sam Park and it is just a mile from Old Mesilla.

Wednesday:
Kinko’s; Old Mesilla shops, Restaurant, exotic birds

Thursday, Friday:
Ron’s allergies/headcold is in full swing, so we decide to stay put and let him rest.

Saturday:
Ron’s health is somewhat improved, and we need to get to Tiffin in Alabama, so we hit the road. We take I-25 to intersect with I-40 and a more northerly route to Alabama. I-25 is a rather empty highway, surrounded by lots of desert vegetation and mountain peaks in the distance on either side. We spend the night in a Walmart Supercenter in Albequerque.

Sunday:
On the road at 7 am sharp. Our goal: Oklahoma City, 564 miles away. We say goodbye to the Land of Many Enchantments, we will have to return to experience more of them in Santa Fe, Taos and Albequerque at another time. We drive into the panhandle of Texas where we see long blue horizons, miles of flat grazing land, mostly dry and brown, and scattered cattle on either side of the highway. Occasionally we are surprised by rolling hills and green pastures. As we drive through Amarillo, we are tempted by billboards to visit the Big Texan Steakhouse. We had seen a feature on it on TV also. They serve up a 72 oz. steak with all the trimmings. You can have it for free IF you eat it all within a prescribed amount of time. That’s 4 ½ lb. of Texas beef! It was a little too early for such a challenge, so we drove onward.
